THE STORY OF “CARMEN. SPANISH SUITE”

The ballet was created by the honored artist of Russia, leading soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre Andrey Merkuryev specifically for Moscow State Ballet. The play is based on the story of Carmen told by Prospero Merime, which was repeatedly reconsidered by such great talents as Marius Petipa,Georges Bizet, Kasian Goleyzovsky, Roland Petit, Rodion Shchedrin and Alberto Alonso, Mats Ek, Matthew Bourne, Jiří Kylián. Spanish passion and infidelity, freedom, crime and death – you will see it all in our Carmen. But no one has ever left the heroine to decide whether to live or die, to love or to betray. Could Carmen change her destiny if she knew exactly what was in store for her? Andrey Merkuriev gives her a chance to find out. His play is the premonition, the prophecy Carmen heard from a fortune teller. The choreographer gives her the right to decide whether to accept her fate or follow a different path.
The ballet opened on October 8, 2016 on the stage of Russian state Academic Youth Theatre. The setting of the play includes video content broadcast through a projector.
